Cyprus Untied? Security, Trust and the Search for a Solution – Dr Sinem Arslan.

Πώς εξηγείται αυτή η φαινομενική αντίφαση;

81% of Turkish Cypriots believe renewed conflict in Cyprus is possible.
79% support the presence of Turkish troops, and 89% support a military alliance with Turkey.
And yet, at the same time:
84% regard Turkey’s intervention in domestic politics as problematic, 88% are concerned about economic dependence on Turkey, and 79% regard immigration from Turkey as problematic.
How can these apparently contradictory views coexist?
In the new episode of LegalMatters, I speak with Dr Sinem Arslan, a Turkish academic and Visiting Fellow at the LSE Hellenic Observatory, whose recent research examines Turkey’s relationship with the Turkish Cypriot community and the extent of independent Turkish Cypriot political agency.
Her research combines a representative survey of 1,000 Turkish Cypriots with around 75 in-depth interviews with politicians, journalists, academics and other key actors.
We discuss Turkey’s real influence in northern Cyprus; how politically independent Turkish Cypriots actually are; Tufan Erhürman and the limits imposed by Ankara; security fears; Turkish troops and guarantees; the two-state solution; federation; and the profound lack of trust between the two communities.
